Sometimes I'm An Idiot (Live Blogging #19)

Posted Sun, Feb 24, 2008, 7:27 PM

Earlier, when I was blogging on the Best Supporting Actress, I somehow mixed up the nominees for that category with the ones for Best Actress.  I could go back and fix it and pretend that I wasn't so dumb, but a) I have too much integrity and I accept that this is indeed live and b) I'm too lazy.

Sorry about that folks... It's been a long day of typing and staring at screens.  The points I was making remain generally the same... I wanted Amy Ryan (for the reasons I stated earlier) but would have been satisfied with Tilda Swinton (who won).  The comments I made about Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Laura Linney, and Ellen Page all stand.

So, on to Best Actress, for real (right?  I'm double-checking now...).

OK, yes...

And the winner is...

Wow: Marion Cotillard!  ANOTHER Frenchie!

It really was a fantastic performance --especially considering how she had to age and how much the character changed as she did.  I hope we get to see more of Mlle. Cotillard in American movies.  Shorter, more sequentially-sensible American movies.

And now, let's see what else I can screw up and then defend...

  • I was shocked that the supporing-actress oscar went to a woman who didn't deliver a powerful performance in Michael Clayton. Goes to show that Hollywood felt none of the others did as well either.

  • Marion Cotillard was amazing in LaVieEnRose and I'm so glad she won. and yes she was the most beautful woman at the Oscars last night...I just finished watching The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford....I had heard it wasn't good but I thought it was great...Casey Affleck was superb.....very underrated film.

  • I am very surprised by who won this category. I think Cate is an incredible actress and she gave 200% in her performance in Elizabeth. She was cheated of this award. She is simply brilliant.
