A Closer Look (Live Blogging #15)

Posted Sun, Feb 24, 2008, 6:53 PM

Jon Stewart introduces "Oscar's salute to binoculars and telescopes."  There's that irony currency.  I laughed.  But as a movie smartypants, I have to say...

"Silence of the Lambs" doesn't count -- those were night vision goggles, not any sort of magnification device.

Now Keri "Math Is Hard" Russell is introducing the nominated song from "August Rush."  Like 99% of you, this will be my first time hearing it...

Crap, it's good.  But if you were an Academy voter, would you want to be responsible for rewarding a movie like "August Rush?"

And now, here's Owen Wilson.  Please, snippy pundits, I beg you: no jokes tomorrow about his recovery from emotional problems.  If he doesn't bring it up, neither should you.  And if Jon Stewart does, he shouldn't come out after the next award.

The short film categories are upon us.  And... another win for the French!  Can they trade all these Oscars in and get just one for "Persepolis?"

  • Do I dare hope the French aren't done? I only purchsed 2 films from this Oscar bunch and they are "Assassination..." and "La Vie En Rose". All nominees are worthy, but it will be a shame if Cotilliard walks away empty handed.

  • Why would the academy allow Jon Stewart to say anything? Once is too much.

  • I have to say that I was quite disappointed with Diaz at the Oscars. I used to think she was wonderful, but no more. Wth her appearance, she took something as glamorous and memorable as the Oscars and turned it into something simple. I am not speaking about her attire, but the rest of her. She looked as though she got right out of bed and threw on that dress. She had no makeup on, or at least it looked that way, and her hair was in a low class ponytail. I will no longer look at another one of her movies. Shame on you, Cameron, a place like the Oscars deserves a day at the hair dressers and with you beginning to look your age, the Oscars is no place to forget to put on some makeup. You just lost a fan. Foolish, very foolish.
