Aw, Rats! (Live Blogging #12)

Animated Feature, the one I care about most, goes to...

"Ratatouille"

Man... I really wanted "Persepolis."  Look, "Ratatouille" wasn't a bad movie, but it was not a great animated feature and it wasn't the best of 2007.  Bird's "The Incredibles" and "The Iron Giant" were of a much higher caliber, but the real point here is that "Persepolis" was a jewel. None of this computer nonsense (heck, most of it isn't even in color).  It also has talking people -- that's right: people!  They get into real peril and experience real emotions.

Again, nothing against the rat.  I love Patton Oswalt, I love Pixar. I love food.  But "Persepolis" is the movie that will love you back.

  • I agree 1000%. The award by name is for "achievement". "Persepolis" achieved way more with 2-D mostly gray scale animation than Pixar's supercomputers.

  • I loved Persepolis too, but Ratatouille was a rare animated film that was both accessible and beautifully crafted. I wish everyone would open their minds and hearts to viewing Persepolis, but I am more than pleased with Ratatouille getting the win. I, personally, think this was Bird's best animated film. It was gorgeous, well written and perfectly put together.

  • I don't get the hype about Ratatouille, especially considering Bird's earlier films, which were head and shoulders above this one.

  • Hype?!??! Quite on the contrary Ratatouille didn't have half the hype of other Disney/Pixar films such as Cars. I almost let this one go by but then my kids asked for it as part of their Christmas stocking stuffer. As we gathered to watch this film it brought together ALL that animated films should bring, fun, laughter, imagery and a message in this case of loyalty and lost innocence. Plus with the great Peter O'Toole playing the ultimate lost innocence character it literally brought a tear to my eye not only in the beauty of the film's message but in the fact that, thank God, one studio still knows what animation is - a true and almost last chance to bring joy and families together on something that all can agree on - FUN! You "art" critics can keep Persepolis and keep blaming everyone but the culprits for their woes. If found it interesting that in this film, despite the horrors that the fundamentalist islamic movement has wrought on its own people, the filmmaker insisted on proving that Catholic Nuns are worse - YEAH RIGHT! When will people open their eyes to the truth, but then that has always been the goal to dumb the masses down so much that they are blind to the truth.

  • The trouble was "Persepolis" and "Ratatouille" didn't belong in the same category. It was as if you'd try to put "Tootsie" and "The Godfather" in the same category. Oh wait, they did that, too. But seriously, as more and more artists use animation to tell serious stories, this problem will come up more often. Need to split the category - maybe "animated feature" and "animated comedy" or "animated children's film."

  • Umm, just clarifying ... so"Ratatouille" is better because it brought what "all animated films should bring, fun, laughter, imagery and a message?" (As more artists use animation to tell all kinds of stories, this can't possibly be the criteria) And - the one I'm really struggling with ..."Persepolis" is "bad" because it fails to put the blame for Islamic extremism squarely enough on the shoulders of who? Islamic teenage girls? "Nuns are worse" ... what is this person babbling about? The Iranian girl in the film is just telling her own story - her opinion. I loved both films - just think they belonged in different categories. Oh, well, to each his own.

  • whoops, sorry about my multiple posts, obviously i'd had too much coffee. i think that being nominated for 5 and taking home best animated pic oscar definitely qualifies as "hype," cars definitely wasn't in the running. also, i liked the movie okay, i just don't get it winnning an oscar, it's almost like they're giving an oscar to brad bird himself, not just this movie...
