Iron Jon (Live Blogging #10)

Posted Sun, Feb 24, 2008, 6:07 PM

I think Jon Stewart is doing a great job.  Not every joke is hitting solidly, but he is doing a real monologue, staying true to his style, and genuinely making me laugh.  As important, he's radiating a confidence without being smarmy.  I think he's going to have a good night.

The first award is up and it's for "Elizabeth, the Golden Age."  Perfectly acceptable, in my view.  All the nominees had genuine challenges to rise to and they did.  I think the job of costuming for "Sweeney Todd" gave more of a showcase than the others though.  I mean, really: How often do you get to dress people for a costume ball in a Tim Burton movie -- a ball that takes place in a character's fantasy sequence, no less?!

Winner Alexandra Byrne's speech is short and sincere.  The show segues into a video package with Barbra Streisand, a memory of when she won her Oscar ("Hello gorgeous").  Oscar memories are great, but there's already a video series you can buy that catalogues them.  Does the show need the padding?

  • I also think Jon is doing a great job. His humor is current and poignant. The fact of award shows losing the publics attention isn't due to him; it's due to the fact that there are more important things than watching over indulged people over indulging themselves. Really, if the writers strike hadn't ended, life would have continued without this prom show...

  • Oh, puh-leeze, could there have been a more droll host? This guy is so stuck on himself he makes me gag. He went overboard when he got on his political bandwagon. This show is not about politics! I think there are many more comics who would have run circles around Jon Stewart.

  • This was the most BORING Academy Awards show ever! My husband said to hell with it and went to bed. I kept it on but without any sound on...read a book and glanced up at the screen in time to see who won. Pleeeeese find a decent host next year!
