JuNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (Live Blogging #7)

Posted Tue, Jan 22, 2008, 7:14 AM

Well, they fell for it.

Juno got a boatload of nominations, including for direction, lead actress, and best picture.

I love comedies and have been on a near-lifelong mission to prove that comedies deserve consideration as Oscar-caliber films.  And now I am on a mission to prove that Juno was not an Oscar-caliber film.

I know this is going to get a lot of you riled up.  Good, let's talk.

I'll post a lot more about this later.  Like I said, I'm cranky.

My other initial reactions... some rather pedestrian choices for musical score and song... glad to see acknowledgement for Viggo Mortensen... would have been nice to see more acknowledgement for Enchanted... did ANYONE see The Lookout?... too bad Zodiac wasn't released in December... nothing from the great comedies Knocked Up and Superbad?...

By the way, TV Guide channel never went live.  They had more important stuff to do: an infomercial for makeup that you can apply with a high-pressure airhose.  I wish I were kidding.

Check back in later in the day for a more succint post on what happened this morning.  Now, it's time for a nap!

  • Finally, FINALLY, someone associated with an award recognizes that Tommie Lee Jones' performance in In the Valley of Elah was one of the great performances of recent times. It was extrairdinary, subtle, commanding without the histrionics of Daniel Day lewis, also a fine actor.

  • The film that was robbed was "Into the Wild." A far better picture overall than the ugly "There will be BLOOD," which was a great film none-the-less. There was a passion and heart and texture to that movie that is rare and it was the first film from Sean Penn that was full of heart and love and mystery. Juno was a cute film and my hat goes off to the pitched and skewed tone of that film and the heart too, but "Best Picture?" Come on. A great surprise was the excellent choice to nominate Tommy Lee Jones for "Into the Valley..." A great performance from another Oscar caliber film that was very overlooked by audiences.

  • Knocked up and Superbad were overrated vulgar pieces of junk. Barely funny in the least.

  • I am starting to believe that these nominations are paid for in advance or all of the academy is waiting for another member to recommend a film (ie.OPRAH ) in order to have a "nomination". The films this year were not that great, and the worst is Juno. Please, this film should have been an after school special.

  • Okay, here's my two cents about the movies I've seen & Oscar bids! First, I was very happy to see Juno, be acknowledegd for Movie, actress, etc. I must disagee w/ above, you cannot even put this film next to 'Knocked -up'or other 1, really... Juno although has some funniest, smart & sarcastic dialogue... it was about 2 people that cared for each other, caught in dilemma. Not like Knocked, which is about a 1 night stand without using precautions! The script was so clever & probably the award should go to the ensemble cast , who were all( incl Garner)excellent. The guild did seem go for violence this year( Old men & Blood). But I say hooray to Johny Depp, since he has not been acknowledged as Capt. Sparrow, he might this time as Barber Sweeney Todd ! I think Helena Bonham should gotten nod to as the sinister meat pie lady, who gets her due! Thanks Lois
